Recently transitioning from a prolific career in photography to filmmaking, Ian Derry is a true multi-disciplinary artist who brings his keen photographic eye to his filmmaking.
His stunning short film ‘Johanna’ was screened as part of the 2017 Saatchi & Saatchi New Directors’ Showcase, picked up both D&AD and Grierson nominations and won GOLD at the Kinsale Sharks for Best Doco Short Film. He’s since directed campaigns for brands including Nike, Nicorette, Seat, Microsoft, Johnnie Walker, Versace, Hugo Boss and Fitbit.
Ian is in postproduction now for a feature length Netflix Original Documentary of Johanna, due to be released in spring 2022.
Ian lives with his family in London.

Focuses on the Red Sea and how its coral holds the key to saving the ecosystems around the world.
Filmed in Saudi Arabia and Mexico it will be on screens next June 2024.

Initially it premiered on Nowness and become a Vimeo Staff Pick before being selected by National Geographic for Directors Showcase, it currently has over 80 million views.
The film was shown at Cannes Lions Festival as part of the Saatchi & Saatchi Next Directors’ Showcase and subsequently went on to win GOLD for Best Documentary Short at the 2017 Kinsale Sharks. It also picked up two further nominations for D&AD and a prestigious Grierson award.
